Monument have always strived to make a professional a quality pipe end cleaner and since the 1960s Monument Tools has designed, manufactured and marketed professionally quality pipe end cleaners.
The original drawings from 30th January 1968 are shown indicating there always has been a need to provide a pipe end cleaner for copper pipe ready for soldering.
Later into the 1980s Monument manufactured the 364C Pipe End Cleaner, again #MadeInBritain. Subsequently Monument sold the DBB1522 15mm and 22mm Cleaning and Deburring brush.

Why remove the oxide or surface from a copper pipe for a soldered joint?
Removing oxide (tarnish or patina) from a copper pipe ensures a flawless, leak-free soldered joint, as oxides prevent solder from properly adhering to the metal. It also reveals the underlying metal so you can inspect for hidden pinhole leaks and restores a polished, professional appearance.

Removing the oxide layer (often called tarnish or patina) from a copper pipe is critical before installing a compression fitting because the fitting’s brass “olive” (ferrule) must bite directly into clean, bare copper to create a reliable, watertight seal.

Sometimes accelerated galvanic degradation frequently occurs at the boundary between two different metal oxides due to galvanic effects between the underlying base metals, or when an oxide layer breaks down in the presence of an electrolyte, if you ensure a good joint Mechanical or Soldered you can prevent the appearance of the electrolyte and hence the opportunity for corrosion can be minimised.
